Homemade 3-Grain Hoagie Sandwich Bun Recipe

When you are gifted shredded beef and it sets you to craving  a grilled beef sandwich, make your own buns. At least you can control the ingredients of your bread while you indulge!

3-Grain Hoagie Sandwich Bun Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup whole grain rolled oats
  • 1/4 cup boiling water (for soaking oats)
  • 1/2 cup unbleached white flour
  • 1 teaspoon yeast
  • 1 tablespoon warm water (to activate yeast)
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  • Pour 1/4 cup boiling water of the oats in a small bowl. Let sit until softened and cooled to lukewarm temperature.
  • Mix the 1 tablespoon warm water, honey, and yeast in a separate small cup. Let sit until frothy.
  • Combine white and wheat flour in a larger bowl. Stir in softened and cooled oats and the activated yeast.
  • Knead dough on lightly floured surface for 5 minutes. Form into two oblong 6-inch hoagie shapes. Place loaves on parchment paper, cover, and let rise for 40 minutes.
  • Score the tops of each loaf. Bake at 375 degrees for 15-18 minutes until golden brown and done.
  • Cool before cutting.

  3. Combine: In a larger bowl, whisk the white flour, whole wheat flour, and salt. Stir in the cooled, softened oats (along with any remaining moisture in their bowl) and the activated yeast mixture. [1, 2]
